Traditionally, riesling has a reputation for being at the sweeter end of the spectrum of white wines, but in fact most contemporary rieslings have a slightly drier character than would originally have come from the original German grape. Sweeter versions are still available (especially among those wines that have been aged), but the most striking characteristic of riesling these days is usually the aroma – these wines are often packed with orchard fruit notes.

Its low alcohol content and refreshing acidity make riesling a good pairing with spicy food, seafood or dishes with citrus flavours – although it’s also very easy to drink on its own.
