The story of Donnafugata started in the Rallo family’s historic cellars in Marsala in 1983, before the next chapter saw them move to the Contessa Entellina vineyards in western Sicily. An extra twist was added in 1989 when the family added a plot on the island of Pantelleria, where it produces ‘naturally’ sweet wines.

The family has now firmly established itself as a strong force within the Sicilian wine scene, helping to develop the style and global reputation of the island's wine. Grapes are sourced from plots on the northern side of Mount Etna and from the area of Vittoria Doc and Cerasuolo di Vittoria Docg in the southeast. This produces a mix of soft floral reds and more assertive volcanic wines.

The name Donnafugata – literally meaning ‘fleeing woman’ – references the story of a queen who took refuge in the area where the winery’s vineyards are now located. Her windblown effigy now appears on every bottle.
