There’s a long history behind Château Grand Puy Lacoste, part of the Pauillac appellation in the renowned Bordeaux region. The present-day winery’s roots can be traced back to at least the mid-18th century, when Pierre Ducasse acquired the estate that then became known as Château Grand Puy Ducasse.
The estate went through several name changes over the years owing to marriages of the family’s daughters. For example, it was known as Saint-Guiron for a time in the 19th century, before taking on its current name when François Lacoste married into the family. Despite all these name changes, the reputation continued, and the wine created here was classified among the 18 Cinquièmes Crus (Fifth Growths) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
In its current form, the estate covers around 90 acres of land a few kilometres from the town of Pauillac. The soils of this area (limestone foundation under a deep gravel topsoil) are known for helping classic varieties thrive, and accordingly the around three quarters of the land is planted with cabernet sauvignon grapes, with merlot and cabernet franc filling the remainder.
The estate produces around 12,000 cases of wine per year, fermenting it in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before aging it for over a year in oak barrels.
