The current incarnation of Ca dei Frati has been in place since 1939, when Felice Dal Cero took over the estate after moving to the area from Montecchia di Crosara, near Verona. However, the heritage of the estate runs much further back into history – the earliest written reference to it (“a house with a cellar located in Lugana in the Sermion district known as the place of the Friars”) comes from 1782.

Founder Felice Dal Cero worked in both the cellar and the vineyard for 30 years before handing over the reins to his son Pietro, who bottled his first wines with the label Lugana Casa dei Frati – later to become simply Ca dei Frati.

Pietro was a key player in the development of not only the vineyard but also the area, helping to establish the DOC in 1969. When Pietro died in 2012, the company passed into the hands of his wife Santa Rosa and their children Igino, Gian Franco and Anna Maria, honouring the family legacy with the same enthusiasm and dedication.

A long-term collaboration with winemaker Gino Veronelli has established a clear and well-honed vinification process here – the fruits of each vineyard are vinified separately to bring out the individual characters in full-bodied wines.
