New Zealand Ata Rangi

Located in Martinborough · New Zealand

This is a small winery, but it’s got a big reputation when it comes to serious Pinot Noir.

Ata Rangi (which means ‘new beginning’ or ‘dawn sky’) is set at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island, where it is owned and managed by Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Clive was one of the pioneers of winegrowing in this area when he first planted vines on a small sheep paddock on the edge of Martinborough village in 1980.

Since then the winery has grown in size and reputation, thanks to a skilled team headed by dynamic winemaker Helen Masters. This leaves owner Clive with more time to dedicate to issues of conservation and the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson.

As a testament to the quality of wines here, flagship wine Ata Rangi Pinot Noir was awarded the first Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa (or Grand Cru of New Zealand) in 2010.
