Ch. Musar was established by Gaston Hochar in 1930. Despite being located 15 miles north of Beirut, they have produced wine every single year bar 1976 and 1984. Quite impressive considering it is frequently in the middle of a war zone!
The vineyards benefit from an altitude of around 1000 metres. This superb wine is always a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault, all from the estates vineyards around 1000m above sea level. Serge Hochar, who has been involved with the property since 1959, states that the Cabernet Sauvignon provides "the bones and the skeleton to the wine, the Carignan the flesh and muscle and the Cinsault the silky smooth finesse".
Musar wines are unique in that Hochar blends the varietals only after they have spent three years in barrels and then waits a further four years before releasing the end result.
1998 Vintage review: Jancis Robinson - 18.5/20
Cool year, Cinsault dominated. Cold and rainy until June, with a sunny, dry summer. Harvest began on 9 September.
Pale, particularly bright garnet. Light, spicy, particularly well-integrated nose. Already well developed. Sweet start and very nicely mature. Seems just right now. The opposite of heavy. Lifted, jewel-bright. Really lovely wine. Fresh, sweet with some very slight mintiness. Dry finish and it would go beautifully with food. Very long. One of my favourite wines in this collection. Is it the Cinsault I like so much?
